Strategic Narrative Overview

After several weeks of air attacks and a naval bombardment, Australian 24th Brigade troops landed on Labuan on 10 June 1945, carried by American and Australian ships. The harbour and main airfield fell quickly, but the outnumbered Japanese garrison held a fortified interior position. Initial Australian assaults failed; heavy bombardment followed. A Japanese raid on 21 June was repulsed, and Australian forces then overran the position. Subsequent patrols eliminated the remaining defenders.

01 / The Origins

In mid-1945, Allied commanders planned to seize the Brunei Bay area of northern Borneo to establish a strategic base supporting future offensive operations in the Pacific. Labuan island, lying off the coast, was identified as a key objective due to its harbour and airfield. The operation formed part of the broader Australian invasion of North Borneo, launched as Japanese power in the region was weakening.

03 / The Outcome

The Japanese garrison was effectively destroyed, with 389 killed and 11 captured against 34 Australian dead. Allied forces then developed Labuan into a significant military base. The 24th Brigade departed to seize the eastern shore of Brunei Bay. The airfield was expanded for Royal Australian Air Force use. Civilian infrastructure had to be rebuilt due to bombardment damage, and a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery was later established on the island.
