Strategic Narrative Overview
The Romanian Second Army, commanded by General Alexandru Averescu, launched its offensive on 22 July 1917. Despite the abandonment of the complementary Nămoloasa offensive before it began—undermining the broader encirclement plan—Romanian forces advanced against German positions and achieved meaningful territorial gains. The battle lasted eleven days, demonstrating improved Romanian operational capacity following the army's reorganization and retraining during the preceding months.
01 / The Origins
By mid-1917, Romania had suffered severe setbacks after entering World War I in 1916, losing much of its territory including Bucharest to the Central Powers. With reconstituted forces and Russian support, Romanian commanders planned a coordinated offensive on the Eastern Front to encircle and destroy the German 9th Army, aiming to reverse Romanian fortunes and demonstrate the rebuilt army's capability in tandem with the planned Nămoloasa operation.
03 / The Outcome
The battle concluded on 1 August 1917 with a Romanian and Russian tactical success against the German 9th Army. Although the ambitious encirclement objective was not fully achieved due to the cancellation of the Nămoloasa offensive, General Averescu later described Mărăști as the first true victory in modern Romanian military history, giving a significant morale boost to the Romanian war effort.
