Strategic Narrative Overview
In late June 1944, German forces launched Operation Sturmwind II, a concentrated anti-partisan sweep targeting resistance units concentrated near Osuchy in the Solska Forest. Polish partisan forces, significantly outnumbered and outgunned, were encircled and engaged over two days of intense fighting on 25–26 June. The Germans applied overwhelming pressure, preventing a breakout and inflicting severe losses on the surrounded Polish fighters.
01 / The Origins
By mid-1944, Nazi Germany's occupation of Poland had sparked sustained armed resistance. The Zamość region became a focal point of Polish partisan activity under Operation Tempest, the Home Army's broader campaign of armed insurrection timed to coincide with the Soviet advance. German authorities responded with large-scale anti-partisan sweeps to crush resistance networks operating in the forests of occupied southeastern Poland, including the densely wooded Solska Forest.
03 / The Outcome
The battle ended with a clear German victory. Polish resistance forces suffered heavy casualties and were effectively broken in the Osuchy area. The defeat dealt a serious blow to the local underground in the Zamość region, disrupting the partisan network during a critical phase of the war as the Eastern Front rapidly approached occupied Polish territory.
