Strategic Narrative Overview

On 30 December 1944, the Australian 25th Infantry Battalion attacked Pearl Ridge in a four-pronged assault. The Japanese garrison, reinforced by elements of the 38th Independent Mixed Brigade to near battalion strength, halted the Australians on their right flank. The Australians dug in overnight and repulsed a strong Japanese counterattack. On 31 December they resumed the advance, and by late afternoon had driven the Japanese from the ridge entirely.

01 / The Origins

Following the United States' handover of operational responsibility on Bougainville Island to Australian forces in late 1944, Australian commanders sought to secure tactically important terrain in the island's central sector. Pearl Ridge was identified as a key objective due to its commanding views across the island. Intelligence initially underestimated the defending force, believing it to be fewer than a company of Japanese troops.

03 / The Outcome

With Pearl Ridge secured, Australian forces established an observation post that offered commanding views of the whole of Bougainville Island. Throughout the remaining Bougainville Campaign, the post was used to direct artillery fire as Australian units advanced against Japanese enclaves in both the north and south of the island, giving the ridge lasting operational value beyond the initial two-day engagement.
