Strategic Narrative Overview
Fighting began on 9 October 1879 with the Velika attacks, in which Montenegro won the first assault but suffered defeat in the second. A Montenegrin advance on Novšiće on 4 December 1879 ended in Albanian victory. The Battle of Murino on 8 January 1880 was contested inconclusively, with both sides claiming success. A final engagement at the Ržanica Bridge on 22 April 1880 resulted in another Albanian victory, effectively stalling Montenegrin efforts to occupy the territory.
01 / The Origins
The Congress of Berlin (1878) mandated that the districts of Plav and Gusinje, then part of the Ottoman Scutari Vilayet and inhabited largely by Albanians, be transferred to the Principality of Montenegro. Albanian communities, organized under the League of Prizren and tacitly backed by the Ottoman Empire, refused to accept the transfer, viewing it as a threat to their lands and population. This resistance brought Montenegro into direct armed confrontation with the League.
03 / The Outcome
Montenegro's repeated failures to take Plav and Gusinje by force demonstrated that the League of Prizren could successfully resist the settlement imposed at Berlin. The Great Powers ultimately recognized the impasse and arranged an alternative territorial compensation for Montenegro, substituting the port of Ulcinj and surrounding areas. Plav and Gusinje remained outside Montenegrin control, and the Albanian resistance bolstered the early Albanian national movement.
