Strategic Narrative Overview
From 26 January 1945, Soviet forces tightened the encirclement around the Heiligenbeil pocket, compressing trapped German units against the Frisches Haff lagoon. The decisive Soviet Braunsberg Offensive Operation, conducted between 13 and 22 March 1945, shattered the remaining coherence of the 4th Army. German troops attempted to hold defensive lines and evacuate across the frozen lagoon, but Soviet pressure was relentless and the pocket steadily contracted.
01 / The Origins
By late January 1945, the broader Soviet offensive into East Prussia had isolated significant German forces along the Baltic coast. The Wehrmacht's 4th Army, withdrawing under relentless Soviet pressure, became trapped near Heiligenbeil in a shrinking pocket cut off from the main German lines. The encirclement was part of a deliberate Soviet strategy to eliminate German resistance in East Prussia and sever any potential breakout routes.
03 / The Outcome
By 29 March 1945, organized German resistance in the Heiligenbeil Pocket had collapsed and the Wehrmacht's 4th Army was almost entirely destroyed. Survivors who had not been killed or captured were evacuated across the Frisches Haff. The elimination of this pocket removed the last major German defensive presence in central East Prussia, leaving Soviet forces in full control of the region.
