Strategic Narrative Overview

Iraq expected a swift victory but its advance stalled by December 1980. Iran regrouped, recaptured its territory by June 1982, then invaded Iraq, sustaining a five-year offensive. The conflict featured large-scale trench warfare, deliberate civilian attacks, and Iraqi chemical weapons use. In mid-1988, Iraq launched successful counter-offensives that broke the Iranian push and created a military stalemate.

01 / The Origins

Iraq under Saddam Hussein invaded Iran in September 1980, driven by fear that Ayatollah Khomeini's 1979 Islamic Revolution would inspire Iraq's Shia majority against the Sunni-led Baathist government. Iraq also sought dominance in the Persian Gulf and aimed to reclaim the Shatt al-Arab waterway ceded to Iran in the 1975 Algiers Agreement, exploiting Iran's post-revolutionary military disorganization.

03 / The Outcome

Exhausted by economic losses and declining morale, Iran accepted a ceasefire under UN Security Council Resolution 598, effective August 1988. No borders changed and neither side received war reparations. Both economies were severely damaged. Low-level hostilities continued until Saddam Hussein's overthrow in 2003 gradually normalized relations between the two countries.
