Strategic Narrative Overview

USS Mansfield and USS Hanson began the first sweep on 25 October 1966 off Quang Tri Province. Though initially unproductive, operations expanded steadily; by February 1967 raids reached 230 miles north of the DMZ to the 20th parallel. At peak intensity in May 1967, two cruisers and twelve destroyers were assigned Sea Dragon missions. Royal Australian Navy destroyers HMAS Perth, Hobart, Brisbane, and Vendetta also participated. After one year, the Seventh Fleet credited the operation with sinking or damaging 2,000 supply craft.

01 / The Origins

During the Vietnam War, North Vietnam sustained its forces in the south partly through coastal waterborne supply routes. To cut these lines of communication and destroy supporting infrastructure, the United States Navy launched Operation Sea Dragon in October 1966 under Task Force 70.8. The operation aimed to intercept logistics craft moving south across the Demilitarized Zone and to bombard land targets such as radar stations, boat repair facilities, bridges, and surface-to-air missile sites with naval gunfire.

03 / The Outcome

In April 1968, the operational area was restricted to below the 19th parallel, limiting reach to 150 miles north of the DMZ. On 31 October 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered a halt to all attacks on North Vietnam, and Seventh Fleet assets withdrew south of the DMZ, ending Operation Sea Dragon. Twenty-nine ships had been damaged by North Vietnamese shore battery fire, with five sailors killed and twenty-six wounded over the operation's two-year span.
