Strategic Narrative Overview
With Humaitá's defensive line abandoned, Paraguayan forces regrouped around the Pikysyry River and blocked the Paraguay River with a coastal battery at Angostura. Brazilian troops bypassed this barrier by marching through the Chaco and attacked Paraguayan positions from the rear. This flanking movement shattered the new defensive line and left the capital, Asunción, open to Allied advance.
01 / The Origins
The Pikysyry campaign arose from the broader War of the Triple Alliance, in which Paraguay under Francisco Solano López faced a coalition of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. After Paraguayan advances in Mato Grosso and the failed Corrientes campaign, Allied forces steadily pushed into Paraguayan territory and spent years besieging the fortress of Humaitá before breaking through its defensive line.
03 / The Outcome
Allied forces occupied and sacked Asunción in January 1869, effectively ending organized Paraguayan resistance. President Francisco Solano López fled with remnant troops, and the conflict shifted to an irregular guerrilla phase as Allied forces pursued him across the countryside. This pursuit continued until López was killed in 1870, bringing the war to its final close.
