Strategic Narrative Overview

Royalists maintained a land blockade for most of the siege, recognising that Parliamentary control of the sea allowed the garrison to be resupplied by ship. A brief interlude occurred in July 1644 when the blockade temporarily lifted. Two determined attempts to storm the town were made: the first from October to December 1643, and the second from January to February 1645. Both assaults failed, and the garrison held firm throughout.

01 / The Origins

The First English Civil War erupted in 1642 between King Charles I's Royalist forces and Parliament. Plymouth, a strategically significant port town in Devon, declared for Parliament. Royalist forces moved to capture it, beginning a blockade in August 1642. The town's harbour made it a valuable Parliamentary stronghold, and its loss would have dealt a serious blow to Parliamentary control of the south-west of England.

03 / The Outcome

Parliamentary forces advancing through the south-west finally relieved Plymouth in February 1646, ending over three years of siege. The garrison's survival was a significant Parliamentary success in the region. The relief came as the broader Civil War turned decisively against the Royalists, who surrendered Oxford in June 1646, effectively ending the First English Civil War.
