Strategic Narrative Overview

The Legion of Saxony initiated the siege of Verdun's fortress on 13 October 1870. French defenders mounted fierce resistance, sustained longer than at any other French fortress during the war. French artillery performed effectively throughout the siege, but the garrison could not indefinitely hold against the besieging German force pressing upon the fortified position.

01 / The Origins

The Siege of Verdun took place within the broader context of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71, which erupted after diplomatic tensions between Napoleon III's France and the rising Kingdom of Prussia under Otto von Bismarck. Prussian-led German forces swept into France following their declaration of war in July 1870, systematically investing French fortresses and cities as their armies advanced deep into French territory.

03 / The Outcome

After approximately 26 days of resistance, Verdun surrendered to the German forces on 8 November 1870. The fortress and its supplies passed into German hands. Following the war's conclusion, Verdun was returned to France and took on renewed strategic importance as a fortified position along the newly established Franco-German border created by the Treaty of Frankfurt.
