The 1954 Formula One World Championship of Drivers was contested across nine races, with Juan Manuel Fangio as a leading contender representing Mercedes-Benz, which had returned to Grand Prix racing that season. The Nürburgring, host of the German Grand Prix since the event's early years, provided the venue for the sixth round of the season.
On 1 August 1954, Fangio drove the Mercedes-Benz W196 to victory at the Nürburgring in the German Grand Prix. Ferrari 625 driver Mike Hawthorn, sharing his car with José Froilán González, finished second, while Maurice Trintignant claimed third place, also for Scuderia Ferrari.
Fangio's victory at the German Grand Prix strengthened his position in the 1954 World Championship of Drivers, which he would go on to win. The result also underscored Mercedes-Benz's competitive return to Formula One that season, with Ferrari unable to overcome the German manufacturer on home soil.
