The 1964 Formula One World Championship season included ten races across multiple countries. Austria had not previously hosted a World Championship Grand Prix, and Zeltweg Airfield was selected as the venue, giving Austria its first opportunity to stage an official championship round.
On 23 August 1964, the Austrian Grand Prix was run over 105 laps at Zeltweg Airfield. Ferrari driver Lorenzo Bandini, starting from seventh on the grid, won the race. Richie Ginther of BRM finished second and Brabham's Bob Anderson third. The event also marked the World Championship debut of Austrian driver Jochen Rindt.
Bandini's victory contributed to Ferrari's constructors' campaign in the 1964 season. The race introduced Jochen Rindt to Formula One World Championship competition; he would go on to become the 1970 world champion. Austria subsequently became a regular host of Formula One, eventually at the purpose-built Red Bull Ring near Zeltweg.
