Following the success of the inaugural 1967 Canadian Grand Prix, organizers secured a place for the race on the 1968 Formula One calendar. The venue was switched from Mosport Park to Circuit Mont-Tremblant in St. Jovite, Quebec, with a closely contested Drivers' Championship adding extra interest, as Graham Hill, Jacky Ickx, Jackie Stewart, and defending champion Denny Hulme were separated by only six points.
On September 22, 1968, the 90-lap race at Circuit Mont-Tremblant was won by McLaren's Denny Hulme, who started from sixth on the grid. His teammate Bruce McLaren crossed the line in second place, giving McLaren a dominant one-two finish, while Pedro Rodríguez in a BRM took third place.
Hulme's victory reinforced McLaren's competitiveness during the 1968 season and kept his Drivers' Championship hopes alive.
