Grenoble was selected to host the 10th Winter Olympics as part of the IOC's ongoing expansion of the Games. Growing concerns about doping in sport and questions over competitor eligibility prompted the IOC to introduce formal drug and gender testing protocols ahead of these Games.
The 1968 Winter Olympics took place in Grenoble, France, from 6 to 18 February 1968, drawing 37 nations. For the first time, East and West Germany competed as separate teams, and all athletes were subject to mandatory drug and gender testing ordered by the IOC.
Norway topped the medal table in both gold and total medals, ending a streak of Soviet dominance not seen since 1952. The mandatory testing framework established at Grenoble became a foundational element of Olympic anti-doping and eligibility policy in subsequent Games.
