UEFA organised the 15th edition of the European Cup, inviting domestic league champions from member associations. Milan entered as defending champions. For the first time, the competition replaced tiebreaker playoff matches with the away goals rule, with coin tosses used as a further tiebreaker in two matches.
Feyenoord of the Netherlands defeated Scottish club Celtic after extra time in the final held at San Siro in Milan on 6 May 1970. Milan, the defending champions, were eliminated by Feyenoord in the second round. It was the first European Cup title won by a Dutch club.
Feyenoord's victory sparked a period of Dutch dominance in the European Cup, as Ajax went on to win the following three consecutive titles. The adoption of the away goals rule in this edition also established a tiebreaking method that became a lasting feature of UEFA competitions.
