The 1974 Formula One season opened in Argentina, with teams and drivers gathering at the Buenos Aires circuit. The organisers introduced the longer, faster No.15 circuit configuration for the first time, replacing the previously used No.9 layout, creating new strategic and competitive conditions for the opening round.
On 13 January 1974, Denny Hulme drove his McLaren from tenth on the grid to win the 53-lap race. Ferrari's Niki Lauda finished second and his teammate Clay Regazzoni third. The race was the first of fifteen rounds in both the 1974 World Championship of Drivers and the 1974 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers.
Hulme's win proved to be the last of his Formula One career, his eighth victory in total. It also stood, as of 2025, as the final Formula One race win by a driver from New Zealand. The result set the early championship standings for what would become a closely contested 1974 season.
