The final round of the 1974 Formula One season arrived with the Drivers' Championship still undecided. Emerson Fittipaldi needed only a points finish to secure the title, while Carlos Reutemann had qualified on pole for Brabham alongside teammate Carlos Pace.
Held on October 6, 1974, at Watkins Glen, New York, the race was won by Reutemann from pole, with Pace second. Fittipaldi finished fourth, enough to clinch the championship. Mario Andretti was disqualified after a push-start, and Austrian driver Helmut Koinigg was killed during the race.
Fittipaldi secured his second World Championship in three years and McLaren's first constructors' title. Denny Hulme retired from Formula One after the race. The death of Koinigg and the burning of a Greyhound bus in the party area known as 'the bog' prompted organisers to close that section in subsequent years.
