The 1975 Formula One season opened in Buenos Aires on the extended six-kilometre circuit layout. The Argentine Grand Prix had been reinstated on the calendar as the season opener, with Emerson Fittipaldi arriving as a title contender driving the competitive McLaren M23.
On 12 January 1975, Emerson Fittipaldi won the Argentine Grand Prix for the second time, leading home James Hunt's Hesketh 308 by six seconds. Carlos Reutemann achieved his best career result to that point by finishing third for Brabham on home soil.
Fittipaldi took an early points lead in the 1975 World Championship of Drivers, while Reutemann's podium on home soil raised expectations for the Argentine driver. The result affirmed McLaren's competitiveness at the start of the season.
