The 1975 Formula One season was well underway with Niki Lauda holding a points lead in the World Championship. Emerson Fittipaldi, his closest rival, entered the race with a McLaren M23 but faced mechanical vulnerability. Carlos Reutemann and Frank Williams Racing Cars, still a minor team, sought to compete against the established constructors at the demanding Nürburgring circuit.
Held on 3 August 1975 over 14 laps of the 22.8-kilometre Nürburgring, the race saw Carlos Reutemann win by over a minute and a half for Brabham. Jacques Laffite finished second in a Williams FW04, marking his first points finish in Formula One. Niki Lauda came third in his Ferrari 312T, while Fittipaldi retired with suspension damage.
Reutemann's victory was his first win of the season, and Laffite's second place was the sole podium Frank Williams Racing Cars would achieve in a car of their own construction. Fittipaldi's retirement allowed Lauda to extend his championship lead to 17 points, strengthening his path toward the 1975 Drivers' title.
