Logistical difficulties reaching Japan from Europe — requiring stopovers via Anchorage or Hong Kong due to Soviet and Chinese airspace restrictions — combined with mounting financial costs and safety concerns about the Mount Fuji circuit, made hosting the race increasingly impractical for teams and organizers.
The 1977 Japanese Grand Prix took place on 23 October 1977 at Fuji Speedway, serving as the 17th and concluding round of the 1977 Formula One World Championship. The event drew international competitors despite the considerable travel burden imposed on European-based teams.
Following the race, Japan was removed from the Formula One calendar for a decade. When the Japanese Grand Prix returned in 1987, it moved to the Suzuka Circuit, considered both safer and better suited for spectators. Fuji Speedway did not host another Formula One race until 2007.
