At the high-altitude Österreichring, turbocharged Renault engines held a performance advantage. René Arnoux took pole and led the race from lap 3, but pitted for tyres on lap 21, surrendering the lead to teammate Jabouille. Jones had led early before Arnoux overtook him and remained a close challenger throughout.
Held on 17 August 1980, the race ran 54 laps over the 5.942 km Österreichring. Jabouille held off a charging Alan Jones by eight-tenths of a second to win, with Carlos Reutemann third. Nigel Mansell made his Formula One debut but retired after 40 laps with engine failure, having also suffered fuel burns before the race.
Jabouille's win proved to be his last Formula One victory and last points finish. Alan Jones extended his drivers' championship lead over Nelson Piquet to eleven points, while Williams extended their constructors' lead over Ligier to 26 points, strengthening both title bids with the season entering its final phase.
