The 1984 Formula One World Championship brought teams to the streets of Detroit, Michigan, for the eighth round of the season. Nelson Piquet qualified on pole position for Brabham-BMW, setting up a front-running challenge in a competitive mid-season race.
Piquet led the 63-lap Detroit street race from pole position and won by less than a second over Martin Brundle's Tyrrell-Ford. Elio de Angelis of Lotus-Renault and Teo Fabi in the second Brabham-BMW completed the top four finishers behind Brundle.
The Tyrrell team was subsequently disqualified from the entire 1984 championship for alleged rule infringements, stripping Brundle of his classified second place. Elio de Angelis was promoted to second and Teo Fabi to third in the official Detroit Grand Prix results.
