On 9 December 1984 at the National Stadium in Tokyo, Independiente of Argentina faced Liverpool of England in the annual Intercontinental Cup before a crowd of 62,000. José Percudani scored in the sixth minute to give Independiente the lead, and despite Liverpool holding more possession throughout, the match ended 1–0 in favour of the Argentine side.
The victory was Independiente's second Intercontinental Cup title, following their 1973 triumph, and extended South American clubs' winning streak in the competition to five consecutive editions. Liverpool, appearing in the final for only the second time after their 1981 defeat, again left without the title.
