The 1986–87 UEFA Cup was the 16th edition of UEFA's secondary club competition. English clubs were absent for the second consecutive season due to their ban from European football, altering the competitive field and allowing clubs from other nations greater opportunity to advance deep into the tournament.
IFK Göteborg of Sweden faced Dundee United of Scotland in a two-legged final, with the first leg held at Ullevi in Gothenburg and the second at Tannadice Park in Dundee. Göteborg prevailed on aggregate 2–1 to claim the UEFA Cup title for the second time, having previously won the competition in 1982.
The victory made IFK Göteborg the last Swedish club to win a European trophy and confirmed Sweden's record of two European club titles in total. Dundee United, as runners-up, became the last Scottish club to reach a European final until 2003, marking a long gap for Scottish football at the continental level.
