The Japanese Olympic Committee proposed a continental winter games for Asia in 1982. Sapporo's proven infrastructure, developed for the 1972 Winter Olympics, made it an ideal candidate. The Olympic Council of Asia General Assembly in Seoul in 1984 formally approved Japan as the host of the inaugural edition.
The 1st Asian Winter Games were held in Sapporo, Japan from March 1 to 8, 1986. Seven nations sent a combined 430 athletes and officials to compete across 35 events in seven sports, establishing a new regional winter multi-sport competition modeled on the broader Asian Games.
