The 1990 Formula One World Championship season brought competitors to Imola for the San Marino Grand Prix, the third round of the season and the first race held on European soil that year. Riccardo Patrese, a veteran driver with Williams-Renault, had not won a Grand Prix since the 1983 South African Grand Prix.
On 13 May 1990, the race ran over 61 laps of the 5.04-kilometre Imola circuit. Patrese led the field to claim victory ahead of Gerhard Berger in a McLaren-Honda and Alessandro Nannini in a Benetton-Ford, giving Williams-Renault a notable win and Patrese his third career Formula One victory.
Patrese's win established a record for the longest waiting period between two Formula One Grand Prix victories, spanning 6 years, 6 months, and 28 days. This record stood until the 2018 United States Grand Prix, when Kimi Räikkönen surpassed it, and Patrese also held the record for most Grands Prix between wins until that same race.
