UEFA organised its 21st UEFA Cup competition for European club sides. Liverpool returned as the sole English entrant after serving a five-year ban imposed following the Heysel disaster at the 1985 European Cup final, with an additional year of exclusion applied to them specifically.
Ajax of the Netherlands and Torino of Italy met in a two-legged final, played at Stadio Delle Alpi in Turin and Olympisch Stadion in Amsterdam. The ties ended level at 2–2 on aggregate, and Ajax claimed the trophy on the away goals rule.
Ajax's victory gave the Dutch club their first UEFA Cup title and made them only the second team, after city rivals Juventus of Torino, to have won all three of UEFA's major club trophies: the European Cup, the UEFA Cup, and the Cup Winners' Cup.
