CONMEBOL organized the 1991 Copa América with all ten of its member nations, choosing Chile as host. The tournament retained its traditional all-South American format, which would not be repeated until the 2021 edition, as subsequent tournaments invited outside nations to expand the field to twelve participants.
The 1991 Copa América was held in Chile from 6 to 21 July 1991. All ten CONMEBOL member nations competed, and Argentina claimed the championship, winning the title for the 13th time — a record-tying achievement — and their first Copa América crown since 1959.
Argentina's victory earned them automatic qualification for both the 1992 King Fahd Cup and the 1993 Artemio Franchi Trophy. The tournament also marked the last Copa América played exclusively among CONMEBOL nations until 2021, as the confederation subsequently began inviting guest nations from other confederations to expand participation to twelve teams.
