The end of the Cold War removed the geopolitical tensions that had driven boycotts of previous Olympics. South Africa's dismantling of apartheid allowed its readmission after 32 years. Spain's transition to democracy and Barcelona's ambition to modernize provided a willing and capable host, with the city selected to showcase a new democratic Spanish identity.
From 25 July to 9 August 1992, Barcelona hosted the Games of the XXV Olympiad, drawing athletes from across the world including a reunified Germany and the former Soviet republics competing as the Unified Team. The games were widely praised for their organization, volunteer spirit, and public atmosphere, with the Unified Team topping the medal table with 45 gold medals.
Barcelona underwent a significant urban transformation as a result of hosting the Games, with all venues remaining active afterward. The IOC adopted a new schedule beginning in 1994 alternating Summer and Winter Olympics in different years. The Barcelona model of urban renewal through Olympic hosting was later cited as an example for future Games, notably London 2012.
