Sweden earned the right to host the 1992 contest after Carola won the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest with 'Fångad av en stormvind'. Sveriges Television (SVT) organised the event at the Malmö Isstadion, and a record 23 countries entered, including the Netherlands returning after a one-year absence.
On 9 May 1992, hosts Lydia Capolicchio and Harald Treutiger presented the contest before an international audience. Ireland's Linda Martin performed 'Why Me', written by Johnny Logan, and won the contest, giving Ireland its fourth Eurovision title and Logan his third win as songwriter, having previously triumphed in 1980 and 1987.
Ireland's victory reinforced its dominance in the contest during this era. The United Kingdom finished second for a record thirteenth time, while Malta and Greece achieved their best-ever placements to that point. Notably, for the first time in Eurovision history, the top three songs were all performed in English, reflecting a linguistic shift in the competition.
