Entering the tenth round of the 1994 Formula One World Championship, Michael Schumacher held a substantial points lead over Damon Hill. Mika Häkkinen was suspended and replaced at McLaren by Philippe Alliot, altering the competitive lineup for the race at the Hungaroring.
On 14 August 1994, Schumacher started from pole position and won the 77-lap Hungarian Grand Prix in his Benetton-Ford. Hill finished second in a Williams-Renault, and Jos Verstappen claimed third in the second Benetton-Ford after Martin Brundle's McLaren-Peugeot suffered an electrical failure on the final lap.
Schumacher's seventh victory of the season extended his Drivers' Championship lead over Hill to 31 points with six races left. Verstappen's third-place finish marked the first podium by a Dutch driver in Formula One history.
