Gerhard Berger started on the front row alongside pole-sitter Damon Hill and led for the majority of the 45-lap race at Hockenheim, appearing set to take victory for Benetton-Renault in the eleventh round of the 1996 Formula One World Championship.
With three laps remaining, Berger's engine failed, surrendering the lead to Hill. Hill went on to win, with Jean Alesi inheriting second place and championship rival Jacques Villeneuve finishing third in the other Williams-Renault.
Hill's seventh win of the 1996 season extended his lead over Villeneuve in the Drivers' Championship to 21 points, strengthening his position as the clear title favourite with only five races remaining in the season.
