Heading into the penultimate race of the 1997 season, Drivers' Championship leader Jacques Villeneuve held a one-point advantage over Michael Schumacher. Controversy arose when Villeneuve was initially demoted to the back of the grid for ignoring waved yellow flags during practice, though a Williams appeal restored his pole position start.
Schumacher won the 53-lap race at Suzuka from second on the grid, aided by teammate Eddie Irvine blocking Villeneuve. Villeneuve drove conservatively to fifth place, but Williams later withdrew their yellow-flag appeal, stripping him of the two points he initially earned. Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished second and Irvine third.
Schumacher moved ahead of Villeneuve in the Drivers' Championship, 78 points to 77, setting up a winner-takes-all finale. Williams simultaneously clinched the Constructors' Championship, as Ferrari could not overhaul their points total with only one race remaining. The race was also the final Formula One start for Gianni Morbidelli.
