Overnight rainfall left the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps wet and reduced visibility, forcing the race to start behind the safety car. Häkkinen entered as World Drivers' Championship leader, with McLaren also leading the Constructors' standings, setting up a critical mid-season contest against Ferrari's Michael Schumacher.
Häkkinen led from pole position until a lap-13 spin handed Schumacher the lead. As Schumacher's tyres degraded by lap 34, Häkkinen closed in and on lap 41 overtook Schumacher while both were lapping BAR's Ricardo Zonta, going on to win ahead of Michael Schumacher and Ralf Schumacher in what proved to be Häkkinen's final Formula One victory.
Häkkinen's win extended his Drivers' Championship lead to six points over Michael Schumacher and dropped Barrichello 25 points behind after his retirement. McLaren widened their Constructors' Championship advantage over Ferrari to eight points with four races remaining in the 2000 season.
