Rubens Barrichello took pole and led the first 30 laps, but a failure to upshift on lap 31 allowed Coulthard to pass him. Barrichello briefly retook the lead after Coulthard's pit stop before spinning out on lap 35 with a hydraulics issue, handing control permanently to Coulthard.
