Michael Schumacher qualified on pole position at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, already leading the World Drivers' Championship, while Ferrari led the Constructors' standings. His main rival David Coulthard lined up alongside him, with Barrichello and Häkkinen on the second row, setting up a competitive front-running contest.
Schumacher and Coulthard initially battled for the lead until Coulthard received a ten-second stop-go penalty on lap 14 for pre-race mechanical intervention. Schumacher pitted early, briefly ceding the lead to Barrichello. Rain arrived mid-race, prompting a switch to wet-weather tyres. Schumacher reclaimed the lead after Barrichello's lap-43 pit stop and held on to win by one-tenth of a second.
Schumacher's fifth win of 2000 extended his championship lead to 22 points over Coulthard and 24 over Häkkinen. Ferrari stretched their Constructors' Championship advantage over McLaren to 18 points. Giancarlo Fisichella's third place for Benetton pushed Williams down to fourth in the Constructors' standings with nine races remaining.
