Mika Häkkinen secured pole position and led the first 44 laps. Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn devised a strategy allowing Schumacher to run four laps longer than Häkkinen before pitting, gaining track position during the second round of pit stops.
At the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola on 9 April 2000, Schumacher overtook Häkkinen for the lead during the second pit stop cycle and held the position for the final 18 laps, winning by 1.1 seconds. Coulthard completed a McLaren one-two-three alongside Häkkinen.
The victory was Schumacher's third consecutive race win and 38th overall, extending his Drivers' Championship lead to 21 points. McLaren scored their first constructors' points of the season, moving to second place, though still 29 points behind Ferrari with 14 races remaining.
