Entering the 14th round of the 2002 Formula One World Championship, Michael Schumacher had already established a dominant season with Ferrari. He qualified on pole position at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, with McLaren's Kimi Räikkönen and teammate Rubens Barrichello alongside him on the front rows.
Schumacher led from the start, with Barrichello passing Räikkönen for second place on the opening lap. Ferrari controlled the race throughout the 44 laps, with Schumacher only briefly losing the lead to Barrichello during pit stops before securing a Ferrari one-two finish, with Montoya third for Williams.
Schumacher's tenth victory of the season broke Nigel Mansell's record for most wins in a single Formula One season. His 122-point championship total left him 71 ahead of Barrichello and mathematically unassailable. Ferrari also held an unassailable 87-point lead over Williams in the Constructors' Championship with three races left.
