Biography

Juan Pablo Montoya Roldán is a Colombian racing driver born on September 20, 1975, in Bogotá. He is one of the most successful racing drivers in motorsport history, racing in Formula One, IndyCar, and NASCAR. Montoya's career spans over two decades, and he has won races in some of the world's top racing series. He is Colombia's most accomplished motorsport athlete.

Montoya started his professional racing career in the late 1990s and quickly moved up in international motorsport. After winning the International Formula 3000 championship in 1998, he went to the United States to compete in CART. There, he won the championship as a rookie in 1999 with Chip Ganassi Racing. In 2000, he won the Indianapolis 500 on his first try, earning the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year award.

In 2001, Montoya joined the Williams Formula One team and competed for four and a half seasons. He won his first Formula One race at the 2001 Italian Grand Prix and had seven Grand Prix victories during his six-year Formula One career. After moving to McLaren in 2005, Montoya continued to race at the top level before switching to NASCAR in 2007, where he was named NASCAR Rookie of the Year. His adaptability allowed him to succeed in endurance racing, winning the IMSA SportsCar Championship in 2019 and achieving three victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona.

Throughout his career, Montoya has received many awards, including multiple Deportista del Año awards in Colombia in 1998, 1999, and 2001. He later returned to IndyCar racing and secured a second Indianapolis 500 victory, making him one of the few drivers to have won in Formula One, IndyCar, and NASCAR. He continued racing into the 2020s, with his last NASCAR Cup Series season in 2024 and competing in IndyCar through 2022.

Before Fame

Montoya started kart racing when he was just five years old in Colombia, quickly showing talent in motorsport. By 17, he had moved to car racing, competing in Colombia and Mexico. During these early years, he finished as runner-up in the Copa Formula Renault and won the Nationale Tournement Swift GTI Championship.

His journey to international fame took him through many European racing series, like the Barber Saab Pro Series, Formula Vauxhall Lotus Championship, and British Formula 3 Championship. His big break came in International Formula 3000, where he raced for RSM Marko in 1997 and Super Nova Racing in 1998. He won seven races and clinched the 1998 Drivers' Championship. This success paved the way for his professional racing career in the United States, where he achieved his greatest victories.
