Juan Pablo Montoya claimed pole position and led the opening 15 laps, while Rubens Barrichello, who had qualified second, stalled on the formation lap and rejoined at the back of the field. Dry conditions initially favoured Montoya, but increasing rainfall in the middle stages of the race altered the competitive order.
The 2002 Foster's British Grand Prix was held at Silverstone Circuit on 7 July 2002, contested over 60 laps before 60,000 spectators. Michael Schumacher overtook Montoya for the lead on lap 16 as rain intensified and then controlled the remainder of the race. Barrichello recovered from his formation-lap stall to finish second despite losing control of his car mid-race.
Schumacher's seventh win of the season extended his World Drivers' Championship lead to 54 points, while Barrichello rose from fourth to second in the standings. Ferrari's constructors' lead over Williams grew to 57 points. The result effectively consolidated Ferrari's dominance with seven races still remaining in the 2002 season.
