Heading into the race, Michael Schumacher led the World Drivers' Championship over the Williams pair of Montoya and Ralf Schumacher, while Ferrari led Williams in the Constructors' Championship. The Nürburgring had been rebuilt with an extended layout to create more overtaking opportunities.
On 23 June 2002, 150,000 spectators watched the 60-lap race at the Nürburgring. Montoya took pole but lost the lead to Barrichello by mid-first lap. Barrichello led throughout, with Michael Schumacher finishing second just 0.294 seconds behind, and Räikkönen claiming third for McLaren.
The Ferrari one-two finish allowed Barrichello to rise to fourth in the Drivers' Championship, while Schumacher extended his lead to 46 points over Ralf Schumacher. Ferrari widened their advantage over Williams in the Constructors' Championship, and McLaren held third position.
