Salt Lake City was selected as host city in June 1995 at the 104th IOC Session. The city had long pursued Winter Olympic hosting rights, and the selection set in motion years of infrastructure development and organization under the Salt Lake Organizing Committee.
The XIX Olympic Winter Games were held from February 8 to 24, 2002, in and around Salt Lake City, Utah. A total of 2,399 athletes from 78 nations competed across 78 events in 15 disciplines, under the first IOC presidency of Jacques Rogge. Australia became the first Southern Hemisphere country to win Winter Olympic gold.
The Games ended with a US$40 million surplus, which funded the Utah Athletic Foundation to maintain Olympic venues for ongoing national and international competition. The enduring use of those facilities contributed directly to Salt Lake City being selected to host the Winter Olympics again in 2034.
