The 2003 Formula One season brought Renault back as a competitive constructor, with Fernando Alonso qualifying on pole position at the Hungaroring — a circuit known for its tight, technical layout that had recently been modified to encourage more overtaking.
On 24 August 2003, Fernando Alonso won the 70-lap Hungarian Grand Prix from pole position, delivering Renault their first constructors' win since the 1983 Austrian Grand Prix and their Enstone-based team's first since the 1997 German Grand Prix.
Alonso's victory made him the youngest Formula One race winner in history at that time, surpassing Bruce McLaren's record. He also became the first Spanish driver to win an F1 Grand Prix. The record stood for over five years until Sebastian Vettel broke it at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix.
