Juan Pablo Montoya claimed pole position and led the race for the majority of its 44 laps. However, a late collision between Montoya and Antônio Pizzonia during the closing stages removed Montoya from contention for victory, opening the door for his McLaren teammate.
The 2005 Belgian Grand Prix was held on 11 September 2005 at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. Kimi Räikkönen, starting from second, capitalised on Montoya's late-race incident to win. Fernando Alonso finished second in his Renault, with Jenson Button third in the BAR-Honda.
Räikkönen's victory reduced McLaren's deficit to Renault in the Constructors' Championship to six points with three races remaining. Alonso still led the Drivers' Championship by 25 points and needed only six more points to clinch the title. The race was also the last at Spa before circuit modifications took effect for 2007.
