Germany was set to host the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and FIFA held the Confederations Cup in the host nation as a preparatory tournament. Brazil arrived as reigning 2002 World Cup and 2004 Copa América champions, making them strong contenders for the title.
The 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup was held in Germany from 15 to 29 June 2005. Brazil defeated Argentina 4–1 in the final at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt, a rematch of the 2004 Copa América final, which Brazil had also won. It was Brazil's second Confederations Cup triumph.
Brazil became the first country to simultaneously hold the World Cup, Confederations Cup, and continental championship twice—a feat they had previously achieved in 1997. The tournament also served as a dry run for Germany's infrastructure and organization ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
