Going into the twelfth round of the 2005 Formula One season at Hockenheimring, Fernando Alonso held a lead in the Drivers' Championship, with McLaren's Kimi Räikkönen as his nearest rival. BAR-Honda's Jenson Button had been absent from the podium standings due to the team's disqualification from the San Marino Grand Prix earlier in the season.
On 24 July 2005, Fernando Alonso won the German Grand Prix from pole, claiming his sixth win of the season. Juan Pablo Montoya recovered from 19th on the grid to finish second for McLaren, while Jenson Button completed the podium in third for BAR-Honda. Räikkönen retired from the lead, and Michael Schumacher finished fifth.
Alonso extended his Drivers' Championship lead by 10 points to 36 over Räikkönen, who remained second despite his retirement. Schumacher fell 40 points behind Alonso in third. In the Constructors' Championship, Renault stretched their advantage over McLaren to 22 points, while McLaren widened the gap over third-placed Ferrari to 17 points.
