Michael Schumacher started thirteenth after a qualifying mistake, while Kimi Räikkönen claimed pole using the aggregate qualifying system then in use. BAR's Jenson Button ran competitively throughout the race, and Alonso entered the round leading the Drivers' Championship with three races already complete.
The 62-lap race at Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari saw Räikkönen retire on lap 9 with a driveshaft failure after leading from the start. Alonso took over and held the lead through pit stop phases, with Schumacher charging from thirteenth to finish just two-tenths of a second behind him in second place.
Alonso extended his Drivers' Championship lead with his third win from four races, ending the Schumacher clan's San Marino Grand Prix winning streak dating from 1999. BAR were disqualified for running underweight cars, promoting Alexander Wurz to third place in what was his first Grand Prix start since 2000.
