The 2008 FIFA Club World Cup was contested in Japan from 11 to 21 December 2008. Manchester United defeated Gamba Osaka 5–3 in the semi-finals and then beat South American representative LDU Quito 1–0 in the final at the International Stadium in Yokohama, claiming the title.
Manchester United secured their second world title, following the 1999 Intercontinental Cup, both held in Japan. The 2008 edition also reintroduced the fifth-place match and raised total prize money by US$500,000, and marked the first time the CONMEBOL representative came from neither Argentina nor Brazil.
