Construction workers operating a bulldozer in the Ijegun suburb of Lagos accidentally struck an underground oil pipeline. Fuel began spilling from the ruptured pipe, and moments later the accumulated fuel ignited, triggering a large explosion and fire originating from the Isolo end of Ijegun.
On 15 May 2008, the pipeline explosion unleashed a fire that spread rapidly through surrounding residential buildings and schools, burning through structures while occupants were reportedly still inside. Lagos police assessed the incident as accidental rather than an act of pipeline vandalism or theft, which had been common in the region.
The fire destroyed more than 15 homes and more than 20 vehicles, and damaged Ijegun Primary School. Firefighters and volunteers fought the blaze using sand and water. NNPC firefighters arrived forty minutes after the fire started, followed by the Lagos State Fire Service, who worked together to bring the blaze under control.
